NBA Commends Lagos Judicial Panel On EndSARS Report
The Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch (The Lion Bar) welcomes the report of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on restitution for victims of SARS related abuses and other matters.
The Bar expressed its commendation in a statement signed respectively by its Chairman and Secretary, Messrs Pius Oiwoh and Andrew Lawani.
“We salute the Hon. Justice Doris Okuwobi rtd led panel for the courage, activism and doggedness which they have displayed in coming up with such an all-encompassing report. They have written their names in gold”.
“We also extend special commendation to our colleagues who appeared for many of the victims. Many of them did this on pro-bono terms. They have displayed the finest traditions which the Bar is known for”.
“The Bar similarly commends the Edo State Government for the assurances given to fully implement the report of the Justice Ada Ehigiamusor led panel on Endsars. The report which has already been presented to the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, though its content not yet made public, we are confident that the Panel made up of distinguished personalities representing various interest groups has done a good job”.
“The Lagos panel has made far-reaching findings and recommendations which enjoy wide acceptance. We hope the panel set up by the Governor of Lagos State to come up with the whitepaper does so timeously to give effect to the recommendations of the panel”.
“Finally, we also advise other States who have set up panels to make the report of their panels public to engender public confidence. We hope that the content of the Lagos report which has proved damning to some political office holders serves as a lesson to all who are placed in a position of public trust that they are being watched”, the statement reads.
