NBA Annual General Conference to Hold in Port Harcourt in October
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC) 2021 will hold in October 2021 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. The conference’s theme will be “Taking The Lead.”
Mr. Omubo Frank Briggs, the Chairman of the Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP), presented the proposal to hold the conference in October 2021 as against August, the month in which it has regularly held, at the ongoing meeting of the NBA’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
Some NEC members opposed the move to hold the conference in October, on the premise that the AGC typically provided an opportunity for lawyers to relax as August was usually the court holiday period. Concerns were also expressed about the traffic situation in Port-Harcourt caused by multiple construction projects in the Rivers State capital.
However, some other NEC members expressed the notion that the heads of the court could be approached to postpone the annual vacation given the prolonged closure of courts due to the industrial action embarked upon by members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).
NBA President Olumide Akpata noted that many lawyers had expressed their preference for a physical conference. Still, there were also many concerns to address with hosting a physical conference that would be attended by possibly over 10,000 delegates. Akpata stressed that the NBA was putting relevant measures in place to address all concerns raised.
