Senate Confirms 19 New INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed 19 nominees appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This followed the consideration of the Committee report on INEC and Electoral Matters presented by the Chairman, Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya (Kano South).
Those whose appointments were renewed includes: Ibrahim Abdullahi, mni (Adamawa state), Obo O. Effanga (Cross River), Alh. Umar Ibrahim (Taraba), Dr. Agboke Mitiu Olaleke (Ogun) and Prof. Samuel E. Egwu (Kogi).
New appointments are: Onyeka Pauline Ugbochi (Imo), Prof. Muhammed Lawal Bashar (Sokoto), Prof. Ayobami Salami (Oyo), Amb. Zango Abdussamadu Abdu, mini (Katsina), Queen Elizabeth Agwu Ebonyi, Dr. Agunndu Oliver Tersoo (Benue) and Yomere Gabriel Oritsemlebi (Delta).
Others are Prof. Yahaya Makarfi Ibrahim (Kaduna), Dr. Nura Ali (Kano), Agu SyIvia Uchenna (Enugu), Ahmed Yushau Garki (FCT), Barr. Hudu Yunusa mni (Bauchi), Prof. Uzochukwu Ikemefuna Chijoke (Anambra) and Mohammad B. Nura (Yobe).
Senators of opposition parties, however raised concerns over some of the nominees as card carrying members of some political parties
Senate President Ahmad Lawan in response debunked the allegations, saying that the petitions sent in by some concerned Nigerians were mere allegations
The upper Chamber thereafter confirmed all 19 Nominees.
