PRO BONO: HUMAN RIGHT COMMITTEE OF THE NBA, IJEBU-ODE BRANCH PROSECUTED 30 CASES, 16 PENDING.

The Constitution of the Nigerian Bar Association 2015 [as amended in 2021] under the Uniform Bye-Laws for branches in its Section 9[5] provided that the Human Rights Committee shall promote and protect the principles of the rule of law and fundamental human rights and liberties in such matter, including the prosecution and defence of lawsuits as may be determined by the committee with the approval of the Branch Executive Committee from time to time.

The committee shall equally provide free legal and services in suitable circumstances.

The Human Right Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ijebu Ode branch deriving its power/ authority from the above stated provisions of the Uniform Bye-law for branches has successfully defended thirty [30] cases at both Magistrate and High Courts within its jurisdiction free of charge.

In a report made available to our correspondent by the incumbent Chairman of the Committee, Moruff O. Balogun,Esq., it is stated that between the period of June 2020 – April 2022, about 30 cases were successfully defended by the committee under the former Chairman of the said Committee i.e S.O. BASHORUN, Esq.

In ensuring the indigent defendants are not denied adequate legal representations simply because of their downtrodden status, the committee has further resolved to upgrade its pro bono services in ensuring the indigent defendants get justice even if it will warrant appeals up to the Supreme Court where necessary.
