Buhari Writes Senate on Confirming Justice Ariwoola as Substantive CJN
President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Nigerian Senate to request the confirmation of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Justice Ariwoola was sworn in as acting CJN on June 27, 2022 following the resignation of the former CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammed GCON on health grounds.
Buhari’s request was convened in a letter to the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday. The letter was read by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday.
By Section 231(1) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended), the appointment of a person to the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria shall be made by the President on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council subject to confirmation of such appointment by the Senate.
In line with the above, the confirmation of the Senate is required for Justice Ariwoola’s appointment as the CJN to become effective. In this regard, Justice Ariwoola may be required to appear before the Senate before confirmation.
