Court Rejects Emefiele’s Bid to Bar INEC, AGF from Disqualifying Him; Download Court Papers
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday ruled against an application filed by Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, seeking to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami from preventing him from participating in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.
The CBN governor was represented in court by senior lawyer, Mike Ozekhome SAN, who argued that Emefiele was eligible to run for the post of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria without vacating his position as the CBN Governor.
Emefiele also contended that he is not affected by the provisions of the contentious Section 84 ((12) of the Electoral Act 2022 as he is a public servant and not a political appointee.
Channels TV reports that the court in its ruling, however, summonsed INEC, and the AGF to appear before it on May 12, to show cause on why status quo antebellum, should not be granted to the CBN Governor.
