UNILAG Dismisses Two Lecturers Over Sexual Harassment Allegations
The University of Lagos Governing Council has approved the dismissal of two of its lecturers, Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu of the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, Faculty of Arts; and Dr. Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences.
The university’s governing council arrived at its decision during its meeting on Monday, May 31, 2021. It considered the report and findings of the Senate Committee set up to investigate allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the lecturers in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Investigative series titled “Africa Eye.” The series centers on sexual harassment in universities.
After its meeting, UNILAG’s Governing Council decided and approved that Dr. Ibeneghu and Dr. Oladipo be dismissed from the university’s services for misconduct. Their dismissals took effect from May 31, 2021, and are in line with Section 18 of UNILAG’s Act 1967.
UNILAG’s Governing Council also directed that the Management should review the university’s Sexual Harassment Policy as may be necessary and establish effective strategies to prevent further occurrence.
